In wake of Imelda, Texans can get aid

AUSTIN — Residents of Harris and five other counties hit by Tropical Storm Imelda can receive federal aid after President Donald Trump on Friday granted the state’s request for assistance.
Households can receive up to $35,000 to cover damage caused by the storm, which led to severe flooding in Houston and the surrounding area, Gov. Greg Abbott’s office said in a statement.
Imelda made landfall Sept. 17 and dumped up to 40 inches of rain. Flooding led to dozens of road closures around the region.
Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster, according to the federal announcement.
